Dating back thousands of years, Sangam literature is the oldest literature of South India. But there was a time when, due to ignorance and neglect, these works were in danger of being lost. The man who saved them was U. Ve. Swaminatha Iyer, a Tamil scholar. He went from door to door, collecting crumbling palm-leaf manuscripts, and edited them into books that could be read by all.

Who were the bold heroines and dashing heroes of Sangam literature? What kinds of dance and music were practised by the ancient Tamils? Who were their greatest kings and the wars that they fought?
