- ಮುಖಪುಟದ ಕೆಲಸ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿರುವಾಗಲೇ ಒಳಪುಟ ವಿನ್ಯಾಸದ ಕೆಲಸವೂ ಶುರುವಾಗಲಿ. ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಯಾವ ಅಳತೆಯಲ್ಲಿರಬೇಕು ತೀರ್ಮಾನಿಸಿ ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ತಕ್ಕಂತೆ ವಿನ್ಯಾಸ ಮಾಡಿಸಿ. ಮಾರುಕಟ್ಟೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬಳಕೆಯಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಜನಪ್ರಿಯ ಅಳತೆಗಳು ಇಲ್ಲಿವೆ ನೋಡಿ;
1/8 Demy Size = 5.5” X 8.5”
1/8 Crown Size = 4.5” X 7”
1/4 Crown Size = 7” X 9.5”
1/4 Demy Size = 8.5” X 11”
1/4 Royal Size = 6.5” X 10”
1/16 Demy Size = 6” X 4.2”

In English
In India, about one lakh books are published each year; I have omitted academic and educational books from these figures, and all the statistics concern only literary books.
I am sharing all this to give you an idea of the background and scale of the publishing industry. When it comes to Kannada, it is estimated that around 6,000 to 7,000 books are published every year.
The publishing process, which began more than a thousand years ago by applying ink to paper, has gone through countless stages and hundreds of changes and has now grown into a multi-crore industry. Just as change is the only constant, I believe that this industry will continue to undergo many more changes in the future.
Let us not worry about what happened in the past for now. Do you know how the publishing process works today? Let me explain it as briefly as possible. If you have recently started a publishing business, or are planning to start one, these details may be useful to you.
- The choice of literary genre is entirely up to you. Whether you want to publish short stories, novels, poetry, personality development books, essays, biographies, or any other form of literature is your decision. Find writers who suit your publishing interests, approach them, obtain their manuscripts, and read them once.
- It is good to have an editorial team. When you receive a manuscript that you feel is worth publishing, send it to your editorial team and get their opinion. If they feel that certain changes are required, discuss them with the writer. If the writer agrees with your suggestions and those of your team and makes the necessary changes, proceed to the next stage. If the writer does not agree to make changes according to your suggestions, you must decide whether to proceed or not. If you decide to continue, move to the next stage; otherwise, start again from the previous stage.
- Once everything is agreed upon, agree with the writer. Make sure the agreement is in writing. The agreement should clearly mention the period for which you have the right to print and publish the book, how and how much royalty will be paid, who will hold the rights to the manuscript, and other such matters. Both the publisher and the writer should sign the agreement and retain a copy. There are plenty of sample publisher-author agreements available. Alternatively, you can have an agreement drafted by a lawyer you know.
- Once all the formalities related to the agreement are completed, begin work on the book cover. Discuss the cover design with the writer and the cover designer, provide your suggestions, and get the cover designed.
- While the cover is being designed, the interior layout of the book should also begin. Decide the size of the book and get the interior designed accordingly. Here are some of the popular book sizes used in the market:
-
1/8 Demy Size = 5.5” × 8.5”
1/8 Crown Size = 4.5” × 7”
1/4 Crown Size = 7” × 9.5”
1/4 Demy Size = 8.5” × 11”
1/4 Royal Size = 6.5” × 10”
1/16 Demy Size = 6” × 4.2” - In the meantime, do not forget to apply for an ISBN. You can create an account through https://isbn.gov.in, provide the details of the book, and submit an ISBN request. The ISBN is generally issued within ten days of submission. It is useful for identifying and cataloguing the book.
- Once the design work is completed, the final proofreading should be done. This is extremely important. Check for spelling mistakes, grammatical errors, misplaced punctuation marks, and, overall, make sure that the book is presented in a way that does not cause any difficulty for the reader. If there are errors, mark them and send the pages back to the interior designer for correction.
- Once the cover is completed and the interior pages are also ready, the next step is printing. Discuss with your printer what type of paper should be used and whether the book should have a hard cover or paperback cover. If possible, it is a good idea to get one sample copy printed first. Once everything is confirmed to be correct, print as many copies as required. A first print run of around 1,000 copies is generally common.
- The next step is promotion and distribution. As far as I know, this is where most of us tend to struggle. Promote the book well. Make use of newspapers, social media, and the internet. If you wish to organize book-launch events, discuss them with the writer and conduct them. That too is part of promotion.
- Work on distribution so that the book reaches bookstores across the state. If you are unable to handle distribution yourself, find a good distributor and make sure the book reaches as many bookstores as possible.
- Make the book available on online platforms such as Amazon and Flipkart and promote it there as well.
- No fixed rules say that promotion and distribution must be done in one particular way. The goal should simply be that people should know about the book and the book should sell. That is all that matters.
- Ask the writer to participate in different reader groups and literary communities. Organize discussions about the book from time to time at different bookstores and among reader groups. Encourage the writer to participate in these discussions as well. The writer is just as important to the promotion of the book as you are.
- Maintain proper accounts and records. Make sure that the royalties due to the writer are paid correctly according to the agreement. There is no greater success for a book than seeing it go into a reprint. Make sure you have the necessary promotion and distribution in place for that as well. At the same time, maintain a high level of transparency in all your business dealings.
Likewise, even if a book succeeds, understand why it succeeded, learn from it, and move forward.
Try to run Kannada book publishing as professionally as possible.
This is a brief attempt to explain the various stages involved in publishing a book. In the days ahead, let us try to understand each of these topics in greater depth, one by one.
Until we meet again.
All the best,
