The Call of the Man-Eater is a collection of stories and anecdotes of Anderson's adventures in the southern jungles of undivided India. Frequently sought by tormented villagers, Anderson would comb riverbanks and jungle trails to hunt down panthers and tigers. He negotiated the dangerous terrain with a .405 Winchester rifle, and some help from friends and native informants. Sometimes, he domesticated these wild creatures, as in the case of the hyena, a jackal, a bear, a barking deer and a few snakes, which the hunter-writer kept as pets with him.
